The CSS Virginia had two 2" plates backed up with two 4" layers of wood backed up with a 12" thickness of wood. So a total of 4 inches of iron and 20 inches of wood.

The monitor vs. Merrimack took place in 1862.
If the question asks only about the crews of the two ships, the Monitor had a crew of 59, and the Merrimack had 320, but the entire two-day Battle of Hampton Roads involved thousands more. The Merrimack was joined by five CSN gunboats, and there were five USN warships at Hampton Roads. [The Merrimack sank two of them before the Monitor arrived.]

The first ironclad for the Confederacy was the CSS Virginia. It had been the USS Merrimack and previously been left for "dead" when Confederate troops assaulted the Union base at Norfolk, Virginia. The Union burned it lest it fall into Confederate hands. Southern engineers salvaged the hull of the Merrimack and rebuilt it with thick iron sides, and added her with canons on each side.
If you are referring to the USS Merrimack II, she was a typical 40-gun frigate and would run a crew of about 350 men. If you are talking about the USS Virginia, the Confederate iron-clad that was built on the remains of the hull of the USS Merrimack II, she had a compliment of 320 men.
The Confederates took the hull of the USS Merrimack that had been burned to the waterline and sunk in Norfolk shipyard. They salvaged the engines and used it to create the CSS Virginia by creating a superstructure of thick wood and steel plates.

It was the first time iron ships fought against each other. Officially it was the USS Monitor against the CSS Virginia. The Virginia was made from the sunken hull of the USS Merrimack.
