WWII was mainly fought by infantry formations - guys on foot with rifles. The men also used various kinds of automatic fire weapons, but the rifle was very dominant in terms of numbers.

They were supported by quite large numbers of heavier guns - artillery (cannons). These ranged from about 75 to 155 mm, as standards, measured across the muzzle. It was the cannons that killed most soldiers in the war.

There was a large influx of new types of weaponry during the war, and the combustion engine was to have its definite breakthrough as tool of war, providing transport for the guys with rifles and their cannons. It also made possible primitive types of tanks and aircraft, which were used in large numbers. Though totally insignificant numbers as compared to the aforementioned guys. The war was not a mechanized war in a modern sense, it was a pedestrian war with heavy representation of horsepower in the literal sense. The German armed forces of some 10 000 000 guys with rifles at peak strength had only a few thousand tanks at best, a few hundred thousand motorcars, but millions of horses.

The aircraft (combustion engine, propeller, monoplane types) of the war were initially quite feeble, but eventually capable of destroying entire cities, if amassed in great numbers. By the end of the war, the atomic bomb was used, which meant only one aircraft was needed to destroy an entire city.

Navies were the same as in the first war. Metal platforms with cannons. They by and large proved obsolete because of aircraft. By the end of the war, Navies focused mostly on building metal platforms with aircraft on them instead of guns.

World War 2 sped up development of weapon systems and was thus the last major conflict where the guys with rifles were to be so absolutely dominant (later guerrilla wars uncounted). After the war, mechanization of the ground forces and the jet engined aircraft changed conditions rather drastically, but most important was of course the nuclear capacity.

Very different than all other wars before it.

In WWI most of the time there was two opposing trenches and a no mans land in between each side tried to fight it out until the other cracked.

In WWII the Germans used new blitzkrieg ("lightning war" in German) it used dive bombers called Stukas to destroy the supply depos behind the lines and then using Panzer tanks to pummel the front line solders, then send two pincers to surround them and make them surrender. then area bombing started where you just destroy whole cities to, most of the time to terrorize the citizens and bring down morale. examples are Dresden, Cologne, Tokyo an, of course, Hiroshima.
The campaigns of World War II were fought in all conditions, both openly and covert. Air, land and sea battles abounded. Covert battles in the shadows were waged by intelligence operatives of all sides, including the American OSS, British MI5, and the Soviet NKVD. Armor, aircraft carriers, fire bombing, industrialized murder in concentration camps, genocide, communal punishment and annihilation of entire cities, and the nuclear strikes on Japan, characterized the unprecedented scale of fighting as seen in World War II.
