The war in the west was characterized by large movements of battlefields, consistent union progress, long supply lines, and featured a large number of irregular units of Confederate-aligned raiders.

In contrast the war in the east was usually one of very slow movement, fixed fighting positions, little union progress for three years, and large invasions of the north attempted by the Confederates. Nearly all fighting was done by regiments under control of divisions and generals rather than by partisan raiders.
