In August of 1939, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression treaty. A week after signing the treaty, Germany invaded Poland and World War II began. The first attack of the war took place on September 1, 1939, as German aircraft bombed the Polish town of Wielun.

After the British retreat from France at Dunkirk and France's subsequent surrender in the fist half of 1940, Germany continued its push westward with an aerial offensive over south-east England that was to lead the way to an invasion. At the time, the British air force was one of the strongest in the world, and the air-to-air combat and air-to-ground bombing became known as The Battle of Britain. Despite taking heavy civilian casualties, Britain prevailed and stopped the German movement westwards. This decisive battle is what Winston Churchill would later refer to as the British military's "finest hour".

WWI was fought as a trench war. Basically, each country would dig trenches and try and shoot each other from inside the trench. Or, they would jump out of the trench and try to run into the enemies trench and stab them with their bassonettes.(knife on the end of a gun.) Britain once lost 50,000 men in one day trying to get into the enemies trench, only ten meters or so from the enemies.

However, come WWII, war was revolutionised by Hitler and the Germans. With more men and more resources. And of course, ships and airplanes were far further advanced.
