During World War II, the final phases of the war in Europe were similar to the final phases of the war in the Pacific in several ways. For one thing, the general superiority of the Allies enabled them to initiate combat when and where they chose, rather than the other way around (as had been the case early in the war). For another thing, the Allied troops faced generally unsuccessful yet highly fanatical resistance, leading to continuing casualties and an overall extension of the war.

The European war was shorter than the Pacific War and involved fighting the Wehrmacht, Germany's army. The Germans usually fought with less ferocity than the Japanese did. The Pacific War was fought against Japan's Imperial Army. This campaign involved island-hopping and many naval and air battles. This war ended with the droppings of the atomic bombs.

How were the final phases of the war in Europe similar of the final phases of the war in the pacific?

The enemy was on the run. The Germans were desperately short of men and even boys were fighting. The Japanese were in retreat or penned up on small islands. The leadership had lost the plot. The German Generals wanted to sue for peace but Hitler wouldn't allow it. The Japanese couldn't sue for peace - loss of face wouldn't allow it. The enemy was outof fuel. The Germans simply had no large source. The Japanese had lost their biggest supplier (the US) years earlier and had no large resource. Both were pushed back into their homeland. The Germans were trapped between the British, the Americans, Colonials and Poles and the Russians - they had nowhere to run. The Japanese were penned up in Japan and were well within the reach of American heavy bombers - they had nowhere to run.
