Military action, fighting with lethal force, more than just one battle usually, at the level of the nation state. Often many countries may be involved over an extensive period of time. It has progressed in time from sticks & stones, through swords & bows and arrows to powered weapons such as rifles, handguns & artillery & into missiles of intercontinental destruction. The destructive power now of the individual on the battlefield is out of all proportion to what was possessed even a few years ago. Before long, as technology allows, the idea of remote controlled weapons will transform fighting.

War is a series of battles. An actual battle itself, whether on sea, air, or land...can be described as 100% confusion. Your eyes water up, men seem to move in slow motion, yelling and screaming but none of it seems to register on your mind, gun fire doesn't sound loud...you can't feel your wounds, only notice the blood...and you wonder where that came from...you check your hands, fingers, feet, and feel your face...eyes, ears, scalp, mouth, nose, is still there...but don't know where the bloods coming from...you just keep moving forward in slow motion...

Words that describe the noun war are adjectives; words that describe (modify) the verb war are adverbs; for example:

Adjective: It was a horrible war. It was totalwar. It was a destructive war.

Adverb: They war frequently. They war constantly. They seldom war with their neighbors.
