The US was unprepared for its entrance into World War I. In April 1917, the American Army numbered only 300,000 including all the National Guard units that could be federalized for national service. The Army's arsenal of war supplies was non-existent and there were severe deficiencies in its military structure including training, organization, and supply.

∙ 12y agoBefore WW1 ( and WW2 also ) the population of the USA saw the impending conflict in Europe as a European issue. This is 1915
This was called isolationism.
Because the voting public was against joining the war the Government could not prepare for war in any real way.
As the war progressed and several ship sinking and such demonstrated to the US government and to The people of the USA that they were involved regardless of the feeling that the US should not get involved.
Only in 1917 did real preparation get started.
