I don't know about how interesting it was that the French occupants of Algeria fired upon the very people who were coming to liberate their homeland. I accept the British had attacked the French fleet at Oran, but where would Britain have been if these forces had been taken by the Germans? But then the French were in a terrible position of occupation & no decision was easy to make.
Torch marked the introduction of American forces into the European theater against the Germans (the landing was actually in North Africa). American, British & French forces then began a push to capture Tunisia and link up with the British 8th Army in the East. While this was not the "Second Front" that the Russians wanted (the second front occurred during Operation Overlord), it did mark the beginning of the US land effort against Germany and Italy.
The allied invasion of Northern Africa was called Operation Torch.

Operation Torch
Dwight D. Eisenhower .
Operation Torch, enacted in the autumn of 1942, was fought as a result of the Allied decision to take the fight to the Axis in Europe in the only practical way possible. With the shortage of landing craft as well as ground units, the Allies reckoned that a direct invasion of the European continent was impossible. In its place, driving the Axis out of North Africa was decided upon, which is precisely what "Torch" intended and, in fact, accomplished.
