Audie Murphy, who died in a plane crash in 1971 was the most famous war hero of World War II. Including the Medal of Honor (highest US Military award for valor), he was award over 32 other military awards from the US, France and Belgium -- among them two Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars and the Distinguished Service Cross -- making him the most highly decorated soldier of that War.
