No. It is also possible to ally your country with another country that has a powerful military, or to have a country that no one else wants to take over. If these options are unacceptabe, then having a powerful military is the only way to go.

* NO. Powerful military is not the only way to protect you're country. Unity and diversity of countrymen is the most appropriate way for a nation to protect its country.

Even though a country has its powerful military if there is no unity, well it's useless.

One instance for that is the ahimsa or the non-violent revolution of the Indians that was led by Mahatma Ghandi during his time. They didn't fought the colonizers using their swords and guns but instead they protest:they dont eat and they even slept on streets. And they luckily achieve their independence.

Well, it's just life..today we are in the future..and non-violent revolutions are useless if there are high quality guns and self propelling weapons...and i just think so that all of us can now depend on that powerful military...

What do nationalism and militarism have in common?

Nationalism is basically a desire for independent sovereignty of one's own people. At its extreme, it's also an intense love for one's own people/country, to the point that they believe that their people/country is better than other people/countries. Militarism is when a person strongly supports their country having a very powerful military. A militarist also tends to want to use that powerful military to bully other countries and to push their own country's interests. So you can see how they'd be related. Someone who is a militarist is usually also a nationalist (although not all nationalists are militarists).

How did militarism help bring about world war 1?

Since the Franco-Prussian war, the countries in Europe during that period were filled with militarism. Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, for example, cared about almost nothing else but having total military supremacy. He was always envious of Great Britain's large and powerful navy. Russia had large numbers and France had good artillery. When Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, the rulers and citizens in Europe saw it as an opportunity to prove their country's military supremacy, especially Germany.
