The very last battle of the Civil War was the little-known Battle of Palmito Ranch, in Texas on the Rio Grande River. It occurred on May 12-13, 1865. By then all of the main Confederate armies had surrendered, so the war was basically over. Ironically enough, the battle ended in a Union retreat. The very last Confederate troops had laid down their arms by June 23rd, 1865.
