The very last battle of the Civil War was the little-known Battle of Palmito Ranch, in Texas on the Rio Grande River. It occurred on May 12-13, 1865. By then all of the main Confederate armies had surrendered, so the war was basically over. Ironically enough, the battle ended in a Union retreat. The very last Confederate troops had laid down their arms by June 23rd, 1865.
The last recognized major engagement of the Civil War was the Battle of Columbus, near Columbus, Georgia. However, the last engagement between Union and Confederate forces took place at the Battle of Palmito Ranch, in Texas. However, since this battle took place after Robert E. Lee's formal surrender at Appomattox, most historians cite the Battle of Columbus as the last land battle of the Civil War.
