Maj. Letterman started the US Army's medical corps during the US Civil War (1861-1865). He created the three tier system used up thru the Vietnam War (and still might be used today in the 21st century). The 3 tiers were the: Aid Stations (heavily used in Vietnam); MASH units made famous during the Korean War; and General Hospitals. Being new, the most common US Civil War bandages most likely were bed linens (sheets, etc.) as they were the most common readily available material that was (and still is) suitable for field dressings. Prior to the Civil War, for the US Military, medical men, to include stretcher bearer's, assistants, etc., were "slapped together" (using whatever men were available, that weren't needed as riflemen, cavalrymen, or artillerymen, etc.). Maj. Letterman put some organization into the matter.

There's no fun in playing it safe. Why not try something a little unhinged?
