While they lost the Civil War, the Confederacy did win many victories during the course of the war.

  • 1st Battle of Manassas: Casualties were low (3,000 losses for the North and 2,000 losses for the South), but the Union army fled the field, technically given the Confederates the victory.
  • Seven Days' Battles (or siege of Richmond): Robert E. Lee held off a much larger Union force on the outskirts of Richmond. Even though Lee's army absorbed 20,000 losses while inflicting only 16,000 on George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac, Richmond was saved, and Union troops never got close to it again until June of 1864.
  • 2nd Battle of Manassas: The Confederates fought the Federals in August of 1862 at the same site of the first major battle of the war, this time defeating an army under John Pope. Lee inflicted 15,000 losses on the Union army while only taking 8,000 losses. This victory brought the life of the Confederacy to its peak, and put its chances of survival and outside recognition at the highest.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville: From May 1-5 in 1863, Lee took on a Union army that numbered 140,000 total men under Joseph Hooker, with less than half that number of overall troops. Lee boldly divided his forces and managed to win his finest victory of the war, though he lost 13,000 soldiers and Stonewall Jackson in return. The Federals lost 17,000 men.
  • Battle of the Wilderness: Grant's first major battle in the East; Lee ambushed the Army of the Potomac as it traveled through the Wilderness towards Richmond and inflicted 17,000 losses while taking only 8,000 losses.
  • Battle of Spotsylvania: The Confederates and Federals fought over a vital crossroad leading to Richmond for twelve days. The Federals lost 25,000 soldiers, while the Confederates lost about 11,000 soldiers. While in terms of losses and objective completion it was a victory for the Confederacy, in reality this victory put them on the decline because they were running out of manpower they could use in the war.
  • Battle of Cold Harbor: The Confederates staved off charge after charge by the Federals in one desperate attack to try and drive straight at Richmond. Lee's forces won a victory with ease, but Cold Harbor was the last Southern victory of the war. The Siege of Petersburg began a few weeks later, and the South would eventually lose the war.
