∙ 9y agoOn June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by Serbian separatists. This led to a chain of events that culminated in a war that spanned the continent. There was already an intricate system of alliances in place that would embroil all the major European powers in a major war regardless of the actual spark. This and heightened nationalism throughout Europe are some of the major underlying reasons for World War 1.
