Many of them were just hoping that they might be given some boots sometime! (Incidentally there were no left or right boots. Civil War boots were only one shape. You trod them in.)
In the later half of the war, many Confederates were doomed to stay barefoot, unless they won a battle, when they could strip the enemy of their boots - including the dead men.
The most common chores Civil War soldiers had to do were cleaning the camp, chopping and bringing in firewood, cooking, and digging latrine trenches/pits. If any soldiers/officers owned horses, then someone had to take care of those.

Soldiers, after boot camp, can go to war, but often don't. They will most likely undergo some specialized training in boot camp, but might go to another camp, to learn more about their specialization and be with people who will be with you IF you even have to fight. If you're ancy about going to war, try the army reserve. They are a part of the army. You will meet regularly and the chance of going to war is decreased.

Andersonville, Georgia, was the most overcrowded and harsh military prison camp during the Civil War. It was officially named Camp Sumter but this name is rarely used. Conditions were so harsh that after the war, Union soldiers tried and executed the commander of the camp (Henry Wirz) for war crimes. At least 12,913 Union soldiers died in the camp, of about 45,000 who were sent there.
