Prior to the start of WWII, the Anschlus of Austria to Germany, the Sudenten crises, the Munich accords, and the non-agression pact all played their part leading up to WWII. The invasion of Poland was the official start. This was followed by the Sitzkrieg or phony war. During the winter of 39/40 the Germans prepared for the coming invasions. But during this time, there was also activity on the eastern front. The Soviets occupied their portion of Poland, seized Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Took portions of Romania away and fought the winter of 39/40 with Finland. During 1940, the Germans invaded and conquered Denmark, Norway, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland and France. The battle of Britain was fought and Sea Lion was cancelled. The battle of the Atlantic entered the headlines as U-boats sunk so many ships and would continue throughout the war. Africa, Yugoslavia, Greece, the invasion of the Soviet Union which led to Leningrad, Stalingrad, Kursk, and eventually the defeat of the Nazi regime. But before they were beat, there was Operation Torch to retake Africa, then Sicily and Italy were invaded. D-Day and the liberation of France, to be followed by the battle of the Bulge.

During WW 2, there are more then three important days. Here are a few that impacted the world and the USA:

1. Germany invades Poland in September of 1939 and the Soviet Union, by a treaty with Germany "occupies" eastern Poland;

2.. Attack on Pearl Harbor December 7. 1941 bringing the US into WW 2;

3. June 1944, the invasion of Normandy by British, American and western allies troops;

4. April 1945, Germany surrenders; and

5. In August 1945, the dropping of atomic bombs on Japan ending WW 2.

Other days can be cited as well, however for certain the days mentioned would be among other choices.
