In the South, battles were named based on the location of the fighting. Because the battle of Bull Run was fought near Manassas, VA the South called it the "The Battle of Manassas"

From the Battle of Yorktown. It was the battle that ended the Revolutionary War. Yorktown is the south eastern tip of Virginia.
The south called battles after the nearest town, such as Manassas, or Sharpsburg. The Union called the identical battles after the nearest body of water, such as Bull Run (a "run" is a creek in that part of Virginia), or Antietam (Creek). The Union also named its armies after rivers (Potomac, Ohio, Cumberland, James, Tennessee) and the Rebels named theirs after land areas (Northern Virginia).
The battle of Antietam was fought near the battle of SharpsburgMaryland. But the name Antietam comes from the creek that was near the battlefield , and that was the name the south gave the battle and everyone else just picked up on it.
