A war between communist North Vietnam and the Republic of South Vietnam. After the naval battle(s) between the North Vietnamese Navy and the US Navy in August 1964 in the Tonkin Gulf (referred to as the Tonkin Gulf Incident); the conflict turned into a conventional war between the US and North Vietnam. The war included everything in the US arsenal except for atomic bombs (chemical/biological weapons would be a different topic).
