The assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand of Hungary was the impetus of World War 1. The Serbian (and Bosnian) people wanted their own self rule. They wanted Austrian Hungarian Aristocratic Monarch to leave them alone and quit ruling over them AND treating them like they were fecal matter. Rather than let them rule themselves and being nice to those Balkan Nation people groups the Austrian Hungarian people had to overreact and start killing Serbians. Then other countries were outraged and had their issues with that Monarchy and Germany's Monarchy. So the most convoluted and tragic war ensued.
