The American Revolutionary war began in 1775 with the battles of Lexington and Concord. But the war had been long brewing. Key to the causes were as follows:

Economic: The British had installed taxes among their colonies, most notably a tax on tea which sprung the famous Boston Tea party in 1773.

Political: The colonies wished to detach themselves from the Parliament of Great Britain. Instead of separate colonies governed separately by a country across the sea the colonies revolted, joined together and declared their independence in 1776.
