Guantanamo Bay, on the southeastern coast of Cuba, was seized by the US early in the war (June, 1898), and used as a staging point for attacks on the main Spanish base, Santiago de Cuba, a short distance to the west. The major battle occurred on July 3, 1898 and effectively destroyed the Caribbean Squadron of the Spanish fleet.
The US Navy needed shelter from the hurricane season and landed at Guantanamo Bay which they used as a coaling station and support base.
