It depended on the branch of the US forces involved.
1. US Airmen had to battle North Vietnamese Air Force MiGs over the skies of North Vietnam. This included USAF bomber crews and US Naval aviators in carrier aircraft.
2. US Airmen had to battle ground defense systems in both North and South Vietnam. Army and Navy pilots flew helicopters on attack, rescue, and evacuation missions.
3. US Sailors had fight on the rivers in South Vietnam aboard their Swift Boats.
4. US Sailors had to work the guns while stationed on the gunline aboard USN light & heavy cruisers, one battleship, and destroyers (6", 8", 16" and 5" guns respectively).
5. US Sailors maintained and loaded the carrier aircraft that performed many air missions.
6. US Soldiers & US Marines had to fight ground battles.
7. US Special Operations men had to fight counter-insurgency & guerrilla warfare.
Hell. I am a veteran of the United States Navy and i was a part of several classified missions during the Vietnam War. Several of my comrades were captured and found out. They were monsters, they raped my comrades and they were men. Most Vietnamese people i've met in the following years were all very nice and mannered people. Alas i found where they were taken and was forced to kill every enemy in sight. Ordered from my superior officer i was forced to set explosives at their covered base and i set off the bombs as i rescued my comrades. So combat in Vietnam was hell. They used guns, swords and even brooms. No racism towards anyone because humans are all equal. I hold no grudge against them. Be nice to everyone you meet
The Vietnam War was one of the worst in American history. Combat in the jungle was difficult, and it was hard to know who exactly was the enemy, since Vietnam had two different sides of the war as well.
