Burton on Trent WAS bombed by the Germans during WWII. A plane returning to Germany had remaining bombs subsequent to a bombing raid over Birmingham, the pilot followed the only light travelling East towards home from Birmingham which happened to be a train. The plane bided his time until the train stopped and although Burton was on black out decided that the train had either stopped at engine sheds or at a station in a town so this was his opportunity to cause some damage. The bombs were dropped firstly over Wellington Street just yards from the Station then others in and around Shobnall Street. Once the bombs were gone the plane headed off leaving devastation behind.
