Multiple past and current conflicts exist over geopolitical interests and objectives, specifically oil and natural gas resources. In the context of World War II Germany held the strategic and existential military objective of seizing Caucasus and Kazakh oil fields to fuel and cement their war machine. Vice versa the United States strategically bombed German held fields and refining capacity in Romania as another dimension to oil and warfare. Modern conflicts over oil as national interest have included the First and Second Gulf War in addition to Chinese territorial claims over the South China Sea.

Albeit partially; the greatest naval war in the history of man---World War II in the Pacific was actually fought over oil; specifically the DUTCH EAST INDIES, today called Indonesia/Malaysia areas. Warships, especially Imperial Japanese Warships, since they were on the offensive, consumed oil by the thousands of tons worth DAILY! It was said that the oil in the Dutch East Indies was so pure that Imperial warships could pump the fuel directly into their men 'o war without processing it.

On the other side of the coin, US Navy submarines went after OIL carrying Japanese transports (tankers) with a vengeance. Japanese oil tankers were always a number 1 submarine target.

World War 2 WAS fought over OIL as many wars have been fought over oil but it is not the SOLE reason the war existed. Japan and Germany wanted and needed oil and many Natural Resources because those countries lack oil and natural resources. Japan's main motivation was Imperialism and securing oil fields and places that had the natural resources they so desperately needed. Adolf Hitler needed enough oil to run Europe under the Third Reich and too conduct war until he had victory over all of Europe.

Japan bombed Pearl Harbor for two primary reasons: The US oil embargo placed on Japan and to keep the US Navy from coming after them as they continued their imperialistic invasions and killings of innocent people. The US had been negotiating over the oil embargo with Japanese officials but the Japanese chose to declare war on the US instead (55 minutes after they attacked Pearl Harbor).

Why do countries start war?

The number one reason nations fight is over natural resources and OIL and OIL and OIL. World War 2 was fought in the Pacific over the issue of oil and natural resources. The Gulf War was fought over this reason. There were many more that were fought for this reason. Now I will give you the other reasons. One nation wants another nation to let them be self-ruling and to leave them alone. World War 1 was fought over this reason, and racism. So nations will go against imperialists, fascists, communists and other types of oppressive governments.A megalomaniac wants to rule the world: Adolf Hitler wanted that in World War 2.A nation wants to rule over other nations. The Romans, Moguls, Soviets, and others have been guilty of this. One nation wants what another nation has: Egypt has been attacked many times for their riches in ancient times. It's the same concept as going after oil. The Vikings, Romans and others were guilty of warring over possessions.Nations will battle over ideals, values and other issues such as what happened in the Cold War and World War 1. The US Civil War is an excellent example of this. One nation wants the other nation's land, water and assets. There have been many wars for that reason. One nation harms the possessions or people of another nation. The perfect example of that is the War of 1812 when the Brits were taking American people off their ships and taking the ships too.Nations fight over the border lines and land possession. An excellent example of that was the Mexican American War.Have you noticed I have not said they fought over a woman. Never in a million years will that happen. Men would give up the woman before they will fight over her in a total war.

Is it possible that there will be a WW3 due to North and South Korean recent conflicts?

Yes it is possible the Korean conflicts could cause a world war, but so could the conflicts in the Middle East and any conflicts with the Chinese that may arise. It is more probable a world war would be fought over the Middle East which has the most oil being sold world wide. The world is dependent on that source of oil.

Did Iraq fight against Iran in the 1980s and Kuwait in the 1990s?

No, they fought Iran in the 1990s for control over the oil fields, but neither country had any gain from the war. I can't recall when they fought in Kuwait.

Why were wars fought in US History?

The revolutionary war was fought for independence from Britain. the war of 1812 was fought because Britain didn't like us being free, so they stole our sailors. The Mexican-American war was fought because the USA was destined to take over North America. The civil wars was fought over slavery and its economic and political effects. The Spanish-American war was fought because Spain was not treating its Cuban colonists very well World War I or the Great War was fought because Austria, which was allied with Prussia and the Ottomans, attacked Serbia, which was allied with Russia which was allied with France which was allied with Britain which was allied with the US. World War II was an after effect of the Great War. The treaty of Versailles was too harsh for the Germans, so Hitler wanted Germany to return to its place of power in the world (for more information on why the world wars happened, look into 19th century politics and wars in Europe. The wars during the cold war happened because AMERICANZ hate commies. The current wars (Iraq, Afghanistan) are over oil and anti-terrorism (although the presidential staff, and only the presidential staff, believed there were nuclear weapons in Iraq)

If there is a world war 3 why would it be about oil?

Most wars are over natural resources someone wants from someone else. The Japanese wanted oil in World War 2. Hitler needed oil too so he attacked Russia and Africa. Every country in this world needs oil and not every country has oil wells. If the price of oil keeps going up and it gets scarcer someday then OIL will probably be another motivation for a war. I think it will be more about "you vs. me" like World War 1 was about.
