It was a small US Army garrison on an island in Charleston Harbour.

When South Carolina seceded, this garrison was highly vulnerable to Confederate attack, and Lincoln declared that he would assert Union authority over it. But the Confederate artillery fired on it - the first shots of the war - and it was soon evacuated.

The Battle of Antietam was neither a Union or Confederate victory. Both sides experiences high losses and after two days of the bloodiest battle in the war, they stopped fighting and the Southern forces returned back to Virginia.
