So Lincoln had to re-package it as a crusade against slavery - partly to give his own side something more emotive to fight for, but also (perhaps more urgently) to keep the British from intervening on the other side, which they had come close to doing.

All of this caused a lot of people to re-consider their attitude to slavery, and probably helped to promote abolitionism.
