Carrier Pigeons were used to send messages to the homefront, or to the headquarters. Pigeons were favored for thei strength to fly long distances and quickly.

Dogs were also used to carry messages. Dogs were preferred to humans because dogs can run faster, for longer and on any terrain. Dogs also gave comfort and remided the soldiers of home.

Horses were still being used in many areas to carry supplies and as transportation. Horses are fast runners, so escaping from danger was easier. They are also perfect for charging because of their size. As you can see, animals were heavily relied on in thw World War 1!

Dogs were used as messengers and proved to be as reliable as soldiers in the dangerous job of running messages.

Some people also used dogs as a comfort...Adolf HItler was said to have a dog as a home comfort! :)

P.S. YOu can Google these things in...Type in "Dogs in World War I." :)

Lots of animals were used by US Troops in WWI.

  1. Horses - Horses, donkeys, mules, and camels were, as always, beasts of burden, meaning they carried weighty or bulky items for transport. They carried supplies, medicines, food, water, ammunition. Camels and horses transported the wounded. Even horses wore gas masks.
  2. donkeys
  3. mules
  4. dogs - Dogs and pigeons carried messages between troops
  5. pigeons
  6. Canaries - Like in the coal mines of the 1800s to early 1900s, canaries would die if poisonous gas was present. WWI was the first war to use poisonous gases.
  7. cats - Cats and dogs chased and ate the rats that came into the wet trenches. The cats and dogs prevented the rats from biting the men as they slept.
  8. dogs - Besides killing rats and providing comfort to soldiers, dogs laid telephone wire by walking across fields, many of which had land mines.
  9. Dogs, cats, and unusual animals like monkeys, bears and lions were kept as pets and mascots.

NOTE: The types of animals depended on where the troops were located. For example, camels were in India, along with monkeys and lions. In Britain, the other animals would have been easiest to obtain.
