I don't know if proud is the right word. I think, in general, they believed it had to be done, there was no choice, and by the luck of the draw they were the ones who had to do it. They were willing to do anything, just so it meant that they could get to go home that much sooner. Maybe pride came later, after the war, but it was always tempered with the memory of their friends who never got back. There were 16 million Americans in uniform, and in that mass of individuals there were of course some who didn't want to do their part. Some deserted (one was eventually shot as an example), others shot themselves in the foot to get out of combat (and usually got five years in Leavenworth Federal Prison for it). The guys were not fond of overt patriotic pep talks or flag waving. It was a filthy, nasty job that had to be done.
