After the First Battle of Bull Run, he declared himself insane and demanded to be locked up.

He teamed up successfully with Grant in Tennessee, and gave him solid support in the Vicksburg campaign.

In return, Grant gave him responsibility for destroying the Army of Tennessee - which he failed to do, but ravaged the Georgia farm-country instead, with devastating effect on Southern morale.
