As a young man, he was regarded as an incompetent officer who had moved up through social connections.

On the outbreak of war, he was one of the very few people who realized it would be a long war - as confirmed by letters he wrote to friends in the South.

After the First Battle of Bull Run, he declared himself insane and demanded to be locked up.

He teamed up successfully with Grant in Tennessee, and gave him solid support in the Vicksburg campaign.

In return, Grant gave him responsibility for destroying the Army of Tennessee - which he failed to do, but ravaged the Georgia farm-country instead, with devastating effect on Southern morale.
