The "Cold War" was a battle against communism. North Vietnam was a communist country trying to take over South Vietnam which was NOT a communist country. The US was helping South Vietnam fight North Vietnam so that communist North Vietnam could NOT take it over.

The Republic of South Vietnam was threatened with a physical take over by Communist led North Vietnam, and the US responded by assisting in defending South Vietnam from that attack. It should be pointed out and made well known that the United States was involved in Vietnam well before the 1960's. The U.S. almost supported the North Vietnamese side; however, it was soon discovered that the Ho Chi Minh was communist. The U.S. believed in nationalism which meant that the Vietnamese should possess their own government-boiling down to the issue of liberating them from French colonization. It was just at that time, the Cold War was going strong and we couldn't allow the "reds" to gain another foothold in the world. Sadly, we lost that war . . . along with most of our soldiers' innocence.
