The main event that led up to WWII was the Treaty of Versailles. This treaty, drafted by the Triple Entente (US, GB, FR) after WWI, left the German people impoverished and spiteful of the rest of Europe. When the Nazi party arose under Adolf Hitler, who preached of German Supremacy and what not, the people were all too happy to help him achieve his psychotic dream of conquering Europe.
