Vietnam, was not a political battle. It was a military struggle between two groups with different economic philiosophies, Capitalism, and Communism. Of course the US involved itself to help the Capitalist party.

One of the things that often accompanies communism, is Dictatorship, which was the US' official reason for entering, to support the party with the right to vote, but it was actually a show of power against Russia and China. The US feared, what President Eisenhower called the domino effect, or that if one country became communist, many would follow, and thus, the US intervened in many countries to try and stop this from occurring.

How is the Cold War linked to the Vietnam War?

The Vietnam War is the most famous, but there were many other wars which were part of the greater conflict known as the Cold War. They were armed clashes between Communist and Free Word ideologies, fought in Third World nations. Without the Cold War, the Vietnam War would have simply been a colonial war between the Vietnamese and the French. Vietnam was divided (as Korea was) into North and South. The North was backed by Communism, and the South was backed by the Free World, although in the end the US paid the highest price for it.

Why was the Vietnam war considered a proxy war?

The Vietnam War was considered a proxy war because it involved indirect conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union, with both superpowers supporting opposing sides. The U.S. backed the South Vietnamese government, while the USSR and China supported the communist North Vietnam. This geopolitical struggle was rooted in the broader context of the Cold War, where each superpower sought to expand its influence without engaging in direct military confrontation.
