September 28th, 1778 - A Sunday morning - the Third Continental Dragoons aka: Lady Washington's Guard - were moving to be between the British foraging party in New Jersey and His Excellency's position in New York State.

Early that morning, the inexperienced guard of the dragoons' cavalry unit, had met with militia herding cattle out of the way of the British and stopped for the night in Old Tappan, today's River Vale, NJ.

The British troops under the command of General "No Flint" Grey did a repeat of his surprise on General Anthony Wayne's troops one year earlier in Pennsylvania - on Sept 20-21, 1777 - and attacked the sleeping American Soldiers with bayonets only.

Again, here at Old Tappan, the attack was a success for the British forces. The American cavalry scattered, the dead were hastily buried in a deserted tanning vat, and the British continued in their foraging operation.

See "Dragoon Diary" by C. F. William Maurer for further description of the unit's history.
