WWI was really a complete disaster just waiting to happen.
First of all, there was the fact that most of the countries in Europe were forming HUGE alliances. It wasn't just Britain and Spain. It was those two plus eight other countries. The big two alliances were the Allied Powers (US, Russia, Britain, France, etc.) and Germany, Italy, and the Hungarian Empire (all of those little countries like Serbia.)
Then there was the fact that technology was advancing like mad, so all of the countries wanted the newest toys, and this led to an arms race.
Then there's the fact that all the countries in Europe back then were very proud of who they were. They couldn't stand an insult.
Also, there's the fact that countries like Britain and France had a bunch of colonies, and this made them super rich. The other countries like Germany really wanted to catch up, but they couldn't, and this made them resentful.
And that's just the backstory.
The real 'sparking' event, the one that started the whole thing, is when Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria, was assassinated by a Serbian, one of the countries that wanted to break free from the Austrian/Hungarian Empire.
Because of the resentment, pride, interest in the military, and complicated alliances, the further negotiations between Serbia and Austria led to Britain declaring war on Germany.
Austria-Hungary and Serbia. Austria-Hungary invaded Serbia's privacy and Serbia assassinated Austria-Hungary's future Archduke.
