Some of the main causes are discrimination against the Coptic Christian minority, and the election of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in June 2012, which many more secular Egyptians opposed.

Also, on November 22, 2012, President Morsi issued an executive decree which gave him authoritarian powers. Right after Morsi issued his decree, massive protests and fighting had begun in Egypt. On December 15, Morsi's government used rigged voting to pass a new Constitution which severely limited the rights of women and minorities, among other grievances.

On January 25, 2013, the opposition finally got fed up with President Morsi's actions, and began to form militias. One of the largest rebel militias in Egypt is known as the Black Bloc. Morsi's government has designated it as a terrorist organization.

In late January, the militias began to fight an uprising against the Egyptian government. In Northern Egypt, some rebels demanded that the cities of Port Said and Suez secede from Egypt, and form their own nation.

The fighting continued until February 11, when an unofficial cease-fire took place. However, the civil war in Egypt still hasn't officially ended, and the fighting could still start again at any time.
