The US didn't want to get involved in WW1, because many of it's citizens are from Germany, because it was a reasonably new Country, however, the sinking of the Luisitania, which killed 250 American citizens by the German U-boats (submarines) angerer America, then, Germany sent a telegram to Mexico, telling them to take Texas back and fight America if the US opposes Germany, this gave America an excuse to attack Germany.

Because of Propaganda by FDR to tilt public opinion, which was about 50/50 between neutral & allied.
Actually, WWI was before FDR's time.... it was mostly just a very successful propaganda campaign by the British. It's been said that the Germans had to live down this propaganda in WWI, but in WWII; they lived up to it.

Before WW I, American public opinion turned against Germany following persistent attacks by submarines on merchant shipping. The most notorious sinking was that of the passenger steamer RMS Lusitania on 7 May 1915 when 1198 out of 1959 passengers and crew were killed. The RMS Lusitania was a British ocean liner, and was was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat. In the case of WW II, the surprise attack of Pearl Harbor turned us against Japan which prompted her ally Germany to declare war on us.

In 1915 the sinking of the Lusitania played a key role in turning opinion in the US against Germany. In 1916 an attack on the Sussex resulted in Germany giving a solemn pledge not to attack pssanger vessels. However, a year later, Germany revoked this pledge. There was also the Zimmermann telegram.
