MAIN PLAYERS IN THE VIETNAM WAR:
North Vietnam - COMMUNISTS; therefore they were supported by China & Russia
South Vietnam - NON-COMMUNISTS; The USA was backed up by the South East Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) made up of Australia, France, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, the UK and the US. Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Thailand actually supplied aid and troops. In addition Japan and Okinawa supplied US bases and support.

*The VIETNAMESE HMONG (Mountain People), were also a part of the Vietnam war, but they didn't (and by definition, DON'T) belong to any one country. The Hmong, are a people that are scattered amongst many Asian countries (Laos, China, Vietnam, etc...), so one cannot attribute them as a 'Country' that fought in the Vietnam War.
These are all the nations reported to have been involved in the entire war in Vietnam (19 December 1946 - 1 August 1954, French Indo-China War to 1 November 1955 - 30 April 1975, official US involvement):
Supporting South Vietnam were members of SEATO - United States, Australia, New Zealand, Phillipines, Republic of Korea, Thailand, Khmer Republic (later overthrown by the Khmer Rouge), Kingdom of Laos, and the Republic of China (Taiwan). Supporting the North Vietnamese to varying degrees of involvement were the Khmer Rouge (Cambodian Communist insurgents), Pathet Lao (Laotian Communist insurgents), Peoples Republic of China, and the Soviet Union.
Direct combatants were: North Vietnam vs South Vietnam, South Korea, Thailand, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, and the US.
Primarily, the Vietnam War was between South Vietnam and the incursion from North Vietnam in their attempt to unify the country under the North's communist government. Because of the U.S. membership in the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO), we came to the defense of South Vietnam to preserve democracy in the region. The U.S. was aided in their efforts by Australia, Canada, Korea, Philippines, and Thailand. (Other countries had minor roles in the conflict.) Both China and the Soviet Union provided training, arms, aircraft and advisors to the North Vietnamese government.
French No -- the US did not fight agains the French in the Vietnam war. The primary antagonist was North Vietnam, but troops and irregulars from Laos, Cambodia and China were all invovled.
The Soviet Union (USSR) supplied North Vietnam, and the US fought for South Vietnam.
