Hi Although we still refer to the US as having "allies" (most notably Britain, France, Germany and Japan, the terms Allied and Axis powers refers strictly to World War 2 when the Axis powers were Germany, Italy and Japan, and the Allies were pretty much everyone else. In Vietnam, the fighting was solely between VietNamese soldiers known as the Viet Cong, and American forces. No allies, no axis. Phil
The Axis fought the Allies. The Allies were many countries, some of which were only involved for part of the war. Chief amongst the Allies were Great Britain, her Empire and Commonwealth, the USSR, the USA and France. But the Axis countries also fought countries such as Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Thailand (it was called Siam then), China, Greece etc. So World War Two was truly a world war.
The European countries that were part of the Allies during World War II included the United Kingdom, France, and Poland, among others. Additionally, countries like Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands, and Greece also aligned with the Allies. These nations opposed the Axis powers and worked together to promote their collective interests during the conflict.
At the end of 1940, countries such as Germany, Italy, and Japan were not allies of the United States. These nations were part of the Axis Powers, actively opposing the Allies in World War II. The U.S. had not yet entered the war, but tensions with these countries were escalating.
The main ones Allies: the United States, Great Britian, France, Canada, Russia (the USSR) (also a myriad of other nations like Australia, Poland, etc.) Axis: Germany, Italy and Japan (also other nations like Romania, Austria etc.)
