Antietam
The French and British clashed primarily due to territorial disputes and competition for colonial dominance in North America and India during the 18th century. The rivalry escalated into military conflicts, notably the French and Indian War (1754-1763), which was part of the larger Seven Years' War. Economic interests, trade routes, and alliances with Indigenous peoples further fueled tensions, ultimately leading to significant territorial changes and shifts in power.
NZ was colonized by the British and a country in the British Empire. When Great Britain went to war with Germany, so did NZ, Australia, Canada, and other countries which were then part of the British Empire. WW1 was not merely a clash of countries. It was a clash of empires, even more so than WW2, and it is difficult to equate in a modern context now that Imperialism is in the past. The question "Why should NZ get involved?" was probably not asked in NZ at the time, at least not aloud.

The country in which the French and Germans twice clashed is France. The first major clash between the French and Germans was during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, which resulted in the unification of Germany and the loss of Alsace-Lorraine for France. The second major clash was during World War II, when Germany invaded France in 1940, leading to the occupation of France until 1944.
