South Vietnam was the turf of the Viet Cong (VC). NVA moved through Laos & Cambodia via the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Although, the VC could use sanctuaries in Cambodia (COSVN-Central Office South Vietnam; which we went after, under Nixon's Cambodian Invasion (Incursion) on 01 May 1970-resulting in the Kent State University Shooting on 04 May 1970).

South Vietnam, the VC were actually insurgents fighting against their own government (RVN-Republic of South Vietnam). The NVA (North Vietnamese Army) were regular soldiers with a national flag.

The VC had their own "made up" flag but no government. Technically under the letter of the law, the VC did not have prisoner of war protection as did the NVA and could have been executed for treason when captured; which one was on world wide television in 1968 (Tet Offensive) with a snub nosed .38 revolver through the temple.

The ground fighting occurred all over SOUTH Vietnam. The air war took place all over NORTH Vietnam.
