It was effectively the "border" between the western powers and the communist world. West Germany was an American ally, whereas East Germany was a Soviet ally, and the border between the two was heavily fortified. Many thought that Germany (Berlin in particular) would be where the first shots of a U.S. vs U.S.S.R. war would be fired.
It was split. While physically located in the DDR, or German Democratic Republic, commonly known as East Germany, portions of the city were walled off from East Germany and managed by three, separate nations: the United States, France, and the United Kingdom. These portions of Berlin, collectively designated "West Berlin," were closely associated with the FRG, the Federal Republic of Germany, commonly known as West Germany, but were not technically part of her, and the German constitution did not fully apply to citizens of West Berlin. Until the collapse of the DDR in October of 1990, West Berlin remained technically and legally under the occupation of the WWII Allied Powers.
Germany was divided into two countries during the Cold War (1949 to 1990):
In 1990 the DDR was dissolved, and its former territory became part of the Federal Republic of Germany, which then moved its capital to Berlin.
