The askr is probably refering to Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia but if this is so then the assumtion that the War ended when Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered is once again planting myths into the public mindset.

The Army of Northern Virginia and Robert E. Lee surrendered on April 9th 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse but this was not the end of the war.

Joe Johnston would not surrender until the 26th of April 1865 at this was done at the Bennett House in Durham North Carolina.

Richard Taylor surrendered on May 4th 1865 at Citronelle, Alabama, 40 miles away from Mobile.

Edmund Kirby Smith's department was surrendered for him by Simon Bolivar Buckner at New Orleans on May 26th 1865. Kirby Smith still wanted to fight on.

Native American General Stand Watie held on for almost a month after Kirby Smith's department fell but finally surrendered on June 23rd 1865 at Doaksville near Fort Towson in the Indian Territory.

Robert E. Lee's surrender was the catalyst for the widespread surredering of the Confederate Armies but it did not mark the end of the war.

The surrender of General Watie marked the official end of the Civil War.
