Hostilities began on April 12, 1861, with the Confederate force's bombardment of the U.S. military installation at Fort Sumter, which is located in Charleston (SC) Harbor. General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at the McLean House in the Village of Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on April 9, 1865.
April 12th 1861 - when the Confederates fired on the Union garrison at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbour.

The American Civil War began at Federal Fort Sumter in the Charleston Harbor in April 1861. The Federal fort was fired upon by Rebel forces and surrendered. This brought the Union into the war. Lincoln did not want a civil war but he was against slavery. He did not believe that a war was necessary for the North & South to settle their differences, but as President he was sworn to protect Federal property and lives.

The war itself started in April 12, 1861 with the firing on Fort Sumter.

The first major land battle happened in July 21, 1861 at Bull Run.

The bloodiest single day battle happened in September 17, 1862 at Antietam Maryland.

The turning point and bloodiest overall Battle occurred in July 1,2, & 3, 1863 at Gettysburg Pennsylvania.

The final official battle of the Civil War occurred in April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse.
