The United States ended its policy of isolationism. This had allowed Germany and Japan to expand their empires and become a greater threat to other nations.

The attack of Pearl Harbor was devastating to Oahu. Around 2,350 were killed and 1,178 were injured. The first wave was targeted at airfields and battleships. The second wave hit other ships and ship facilities. The U.S. then became involved in what was World War II. After the war, many men were needed to replace the ones that died in the war. Women stepped up and started to work in offices, businesses, and factories. This was some impact on society and effects of the attack.

The attack on the American naval base at Pearl harbour by the Japanese on 7th December 1941 affected the outcome of WW2 by bringing America in to the conflict. America had been following a policy of isolationism (they did not want to get drawn in to what they saw as primarily a European problem) up until this point.

Prior to Pearl Harbor, the United States was officially neutral, but we had contributed supplies and war material to Britain. The only combat involving American forces was repelling German submarine attacks on American-escorted convoys. A substantial portion of the American population had no interest in joining the European hostilities.

After Pearl Harbor, the United States was a total combatant. For the first six months of the War, American forces were primarily on the defensive and retreating in the Pacific, while in Europe, only American air forces were in combat. After the Battle of Midway, June 6, 1942, the US Navy took the offensive and began pushing back the Japanese forces. In early 1943, American troops participated in the landings in North Africa, and began to push back the German forces. At that point, the end of the war and the unconditional surrender of the Axis forces was only 30 months away.

Pearl Harbor unleashed feelings of retaliation in US "boys" who volunteered in droves to go to war. IF Japan hadn't sunk ships that entombed soldiers alive, IF their planes had not bombed a hospital, and IF Japan had behaved in a more civilized manner, perhaps shock would have prevailed among men. But the Pearl Harbor attack fueled every fiber of anger in US citizens. Men did not know that Washington, D.C. had been given warning of the attack, so sailors thought the attack was unprovoked and unwarranted.

This anger still burned when the US dropped two atomic bombs on Japan.
