There were many US heroes in WWI - too many to list. Some of the most well known (famous) were Medal of Honor recipients: Sergeant Alvin York, Colonel William J. Donovan, Private Frank Gaffney. General of the Armies John J. Pershing. commanding the American Expeditionary Force, who, by the way, is the only living person to have held that title and rank.
