They were Japanese suicide fighter pilots. They would fly planes into ships. As the war in the pacific continued the Japanese leader's new that the American Navy was out growing theirs. In an effort to try to be victorious. They started to recruit, young, new pilot's into the service of the Imperial Air Force telling them they were going to be accepted into the arms of the spirit's with honor when they gave their life by crashing into the 'evil' American ship's killing many 'evil' enemy.
Many did it to not disgrace their families honor but it wasn't wide spread so the Japanese navy would chain these pilot's into the planes and if they refused to fly or didn't crash into the ship they would be shot.
Note: This killing yourself for glory thing was later picked up by . . . Muslim clerics telling their follower's that to arm yourself with a bomb to kill the infidel's would leave you to the promised land as well.
The planes were loaded with explosives and just enough fuel to get to there target. They were designed to destroy as many ships as possible.
Hope this helps
