The Nazis did not use the word Holocaust.
The use of the word Holocaust in this context, meaning the Nazi genocide of the Jews is fairly recent (in English, German and other languages) and only became widespread after the TV miniseries entitled Holocaust in 1978. The Nazis called the genocide the 'Final Solution [of the Jewish question]'. Please see the related question.
The Nazi German program of mass murder (genocide) against all European Jews that the Germans could find & imprison. Although Jews were imprisoned, brutalized, starved & used as slave labor, the Germans intended to kill all of them after they were no longer useful to the Nazis. The program was initiated & authorized by Adolf Hitler. The program was stopped when Germany was defeated and when the Nazi death & concentration camps were liberated/captured by the Allies. It has been estimated that over 6 million Jews were murdered or died of starvation/illness before their salvation came.
Although hundreds of thousands of non-Jews were also killed or imprisoned in these same camps, the term Holocaust is not usually used to refer to these people's fate. Also not normally included in the "Holocaust" is what happened to millions of Soviet POW's captured by Germany 1941-1945. These POW's were also systematically brutalized, starved, and subject to slave-labor & eventually killed. Some people may refer to the extermination program of both Jews & non-Jews as the "Holocaust" although that it not the original intent of this particular term. All these deaths were horrific & evil, and deserve the same level of condemnation, as were considered war crimes & crimes against humanity.
