The Air Force can transport fighting men to and from the war zone quickly. The Air Force can supply fighting units with supplies and equipment anywhere, anytime, and quickly. Air power can also destroy enemy positions further away than any other type of military force; faster, and more accurately than any other military force. It was the airplane (and the aircraft carrier that carried airplanes) that made battleships obsolete. The average WW2 battleship could fire a salvo of 9 shells from it's 9 rifles (cannons) at a range of 20 miles with accuracy. But would often need several salvoes to strike the target, after adjusting fire. Consequently, 9 times the salvoes fired would be the amount of shells expended to strike the target. If the battleship had to fire ten salvoes that would amount to 90 shells fired to hit one target. WW2 aircraft from a carrier could launch 10 airplanes loaded with ten torpedos or ten bombs and hit with deadly accuracy (manned guidence system-the pilot) and hit a target 100 to 200 miles away, depending upon the airplane used. Planes were more accurate and could hit further.
