Bleeding Kansas refers to a period of time when the border area of Kansas and Missouri were in chaos. Missouri was a slave state and Kansas was a free state. Many Kansans did their best to free as many slaves as possible. Among them was John Brown.

The bloodshed that occurred when one thinly-populated state was given the vote over whether it should be slave or free.

Every bully-boy in America, from both sides of the slavery deate, descended on the area, to intimidate voters and try to get the results declared as rigged.
