Shoah means catastrophe, great calamity. It is used by some for the Holocaust, in particular those who feel that the word holocaust has misleading religious implications. (Holocaust is derived from a Greek word meaning whole offering, burnt sacrifice).

You have to count Jews, political dissidents, gypsies, and other "socially undesireables" (that is a Nazi euphemism by the way) the tragic total is over six million. That is only for the Holocaust or Shoah. If you want the total number Hitler was responsible for throughout the Second World War that's over 54 million.
